    The Core Formula

    Most TEAS dosage problems reduce to one relationship:

    Desired dose ÷ Available dose × Quantity = Amount to administer

    Or, written as a proportion:

    Desired dose / Available dose = Amount to administer / Quantity

    You then cross-multiply and solve for the unknown.

    Worked Example 1: Basic Dosage Calculation

    A provider orders 500 mg of a medication. The medication is available as 250 mg per 5 mL. How many mL should be administered?

    1. Set up the proportion: 500 mg / 250 mg = x mL / 5 mL
    2. Cross-multiply: 500 × 5 = 250 × x → 2,500 = 250x
    3. Solve: x = 2,500 ÷ 250 = 10 mL

    Weight-based problems are just multiplication once you identify the correct rate — the challenge is reading the problem carefully enough to pull out the right numbers.

    An order calls for 0.5 g of a medication. It's available as 250 mg tablets. How many tablets should be given?

    1. Convert grams to milligrams: 0.5 g × 1,000 = 500 mg
    2. Divide by the tablet strength: 500 mg ÷ 250 mg = 2 tablets

    This is why metric conversions and dosage calculations are taught together — most real dosage problems require a unit conversion before you can even set up the ratio.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

    • Skipping unit conversion. If the order and the available medication are in different units (g vs. mg, mcg vs. mg), convert first — this is the single most common source of errors.
    • Cross-multiplying incorrectly. Always double-check which numbers are diagonal from each other in your proportion before multiplying.
    • Losing track of what the question is asking. Some problems ask for mL, others for tablets, others for mg — reread the question after you calculate to confirm your answer is in the right unit.
